The life of ancient Hawaiian people is closely connected to kalo or taro.
In the Kumulipo or Creation Chant kalo grew from the son of Wakea (Sky Father)
and Papa (Earth Mother). Named Haloa-naka, he was stillborn and buried and
from his body grew the kalo plant, also called haloa which means everlasting breath.
