One of the only
ducks known to scratch while in flight.

Description The Green-winged Teal grows 10-14 in height and has a wingspan of 24 inches. The female has a dark face while the male has a dull face and a green ring around its eye. They both have a green spot on their wing thus their name. They sleep standing up with their beaks turned into their back feathers. They migrate in large flocks and often fly low over water. Males migrate first and the females migrate later that day.

Lifecycle Breeding season is from late April to early June. The female makes a nest of long grasses near the water, while the male stands guard, and lays one egg per day. There are about 6-10 eggs and the female alone will incubate them for 21-23 days before they hatch. Chicks can swim after one day.

Habitat Usually found in marshlands, ponds and marshy lakes rather than open water.

Diet Feeds on seeds from sedges, pondweeds, bulrushes, grain, berries, grasses, and aquatic vegetation. They also eat insects such as larvae, mollusks, and crustaceans.
